A plant sugar that fights germs in gut and soil

Li Z, Jing S, Chen H, Shang K, Liao C

Plant Signaling

The corn stalks, wheat bran, and vegetable scraps most gardeners toss into the compost bin contain a sugar that could one day help both your gut and your garden beds resist disease.

L-arabinose is a sugar that plants build into their cell walls, and it turns out this sugar does more than just provide energy. In the gut it helps good bacteria thrive, patches up the intestinal lining, and crowds out harmful foodborne germs. Down in the soil, the same sugar switches on a plant's natural defenses and helps friendly microbes protect crop roots from disease.

Key Findings

1

L-arabinose modulates gut microbiota composition, repairs the intestinal barrier, and helps regulate water/salt balance and gut hormone signaling

2

The sugar inhibits foodborne pathogens in the digestive tract and shows potential for alleviating constipation

3

In plant rhizospheres, L-arabinose activates defense pathways in crops and enhances the disease-suppressing power of biocontrol agents

L-arabinose, a simple sugar found in plant cell walls and crop leftovers, can be used to boost gut health and help crops fight off disease, making it a promising natural ingredient for safer food and farming.

Soil health is the capacity of soil to function as a living ecosystem, supporting complex interactions between microorganisms, soil fauna, and plant communities. For plant science, soil health is critical because these biological and chemical soil properties directly control nutrient availability,
