Some rice plants have a genetic glitch that makes their seeds turn an unusual color because of a buildup of plant compounds called flavonoids, the same type of antioxidant found in colorful fruits and vegetables. Researchers tracked down the exact gene responsible for making these compounds and switched it off, which brought the seed color back to normal. Interestingly, the mutant rice still couldn't survive as an embryo, proving that problem was caused by something else entirely, not the pigment buildup itself.
