This gene switch helps corn seeds sprout faster and stronger

The corn seedlings pushing up in fields and gardens this summer got their fast start from a molecular switch that decides how quickly a seed can convert stored fuel into growth.

When a corn seed starts to sprout, it needs to break down its stored sugar and starch to fuel new growth. Researchers found a gene called ZmAGA1 that kicks off this process by breaking apart a stored sugar called raffinose, which then signals a chain of other proteins to release starch energy. Corn plants engineered without this gene sprouted slower, germinated less often, and grew into weaker seedlings, showing just how central this one gene is to getting a plant off to a strong start.
