One gene edit makes tomatoes tougher against virus and drought

If you've ever watched a tomato plant wilt in a summer dry spell or curl up with mosaic virus, this points to a single genetic switch that could fix both problems in future backyard varieties.

Researchers found a gene in tomato plants, called SlCNGC18, that normally holds back the plant's defenses. When they used gene editing to disable it, the tomatoes fought off Cucumber mosaic virus far better and survived drought conditions at much higher rates than normal plants. The edited plants achieved this by boosting their natural defense hormone and adjusting their leaf pores to lose less water.
