Hormone and fertilizer combo supercharges plant's toxic metal cleanup

If you've ever worried about heavy metals lurking in urban soil or old industrial lots, this shows a cheap, plantable fix using nothing more exotic than fertilizer and two natural growth hormones sprayed on a fast-growing shrub.
Castor bean plants can pull cadmium, a toxic heavy metal, out of contaminated soil, but on their own they don't do it very efficiently. Researchers found that feeding the plants a standard fertilizer blend along with two natural plant hormones made them grow much bigger, turn greener, and pull in far more cadmium than untreated plants. The treated plants also built up their own internal defenses, like antioxidants, to handle the stress of storing so much metal.

Chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b content increased 2.48-fold and 1.85-fold respectively compared to untreated control plants
The treatment raised proline, phenolics, and antioxidant enzyme activity (catalase, SOD, peroxidase), pushing cadmium bioconcentration factor to a maximum of 2.54
