Oil spill dispersants shift ocean bacteria without speeding cleanup

This one's a stretch for plant lovers since it's about marine bacteria and oil spill chemistry, not gardens or land plants.
When oil spills happen at sea, responders often spray chemical dispersants to break up the slick. This study found that different dispersant products encourage different types of naturally occurring ocean bacteria to bloom, and those bacteria can eat some of the oil. But surprisingly, the dispersants didn't actually help break down the most persistent toxic hydrocarbons any faster than doing nothing at all, and clumps of oil that stuck together naturally (without dispersant) attracted the most microbial activity.

Pr/C17 and Ph/C18 biomarker ratios increased 3-12 fold in dispersant-treated samples, indicating alkane depletion, but aromatic hydrocarbon degradation (measured via 9MP/1MP ratios) showed limited or variable improvement
Each dispersant enriched a distinct bacterial community: Superdispersant 25 favored Dokdonia, Thalassospira, and Roseobacter; Slickgone EW/NS favored Marinomonas, Colwellia, Psychromonas, and Alcanivorax
Naturally forming marine oil snow (oil-microbe-mineral aggregates) showed high microbial colonization and may offer an effective natural biodegradation pathway, while dispersant-only snow showed little colonization
