A fern's algae partner boosts its drug-cleaning power

The floating ferns that carpet garden ponds and rice paddies host a hidden algae partner that changes how well the whole system filters out human medications washing into the water.

Azolla is a small floating fern that lives with a partner algae called Nostoc tucked inside its leaves. Scientists dosed the fern with three common drugs (an antimalarial, a dewormer, and an antibiotic) and found that ferns with their algae partner handled the chemical stress far better, staying healthier and pulling more of the drugs out of the water than ferns without the partner. The algae seems to act like a built-in bodyguard and cleanup crew, changing both how tough the fern is and where the pollutants end up.
