If you've ever wondered whether plants can help clean up contaminated soil near old industrial sites or roadways, this mustard relative is showing scientists exactly how it pulls off that trick at the molecular level.
Brassica juncea, a mustard-family plant, is really good at soaking up cadmium, a toxic metal, from contaminated soil. Researchers discovered that the plant uses tiny molecules called microRNAs, especially in its roots, to manage the stress and damage the metal causes, with different microRNAs ramping up depending on how much cadmium is present and how long the plant has been exposed. This gives scientists a molecular roadmap for breeding or engineering plants that are even better at cleaning up polluted land.
