The plastic mulch film and stray bottle caps that turn up in garden beds and compost piles could eventually be broken down by enzymes discovered faster thanks to this kind of AI screening.

Certain enzymes made by microbes can chew through the tough plastic used in soda bottles, turning it back into simple building blocks instead of letting it sit in a landfill for centuries. Finding and improving these enzymes used to take scientists years of slow lab work. This review explains how AI tools now help researchers scan huge databases, predict enzyme shapes, and even design brand-new enzymes much faster, which could speed up real-world solutions to plastic pollution.
