Dandelions near factories store cadmium in their leaves, not roots

If you forage dandelion greens or make dandelion tea from plants growing along roadsides or near old industrial lots, this study is a reminder that the plant's cadmium and copper levels can climb well past safe thresholds while looking perfectly healthy.

Dandelions are tough plants that grow just about anywhere, including polluted urban and industrial areas, and they're popular for foraging and herbal remedies. Researchers found that when dandelions grow in contaminated soil, cadmium and copper build up to unsafe levels in the plant, and unlike most other metals tested (which stay trapped in the roots), cadmium moves up into the leaves and flowers, the very parts people harvest. So a dandelion's location matters a lot more than its appearance when it comes to whether it's safe to eat or use.
