The next time a stressed houseplant or drought-stricken shrub changes color or growth pattern, it's likely running an internal chemical signaling system scientists are only now learning to read and could one day engineer into hardier garden varieties.

Plants can't run from bad weather or hungry insects, so they've evolved an enormous chemical toolkit, thousands of unique compounds, to sense trouble and respond. This review pulls together new discoveries showing these chemicals aren't just passive defenses; many actively signal to the plant itself, steering growth, timing, and development. Scientists hope to eventually use this knowledge to breed or engineer crops and garden plants that adapt more smoothly to a changing climate.
