Wild sunflower confirmed growing along a Sacramento-area road

iNaturalist: capitalsnatureandnatives

Native Plants

That roadside stretch of Elverta might look like scrubby edge-land, but a confirmed sunflower sighting there means pollinators have a food source and mapmakers have one more verified dot on the range map.

Someone out walking near Elverta, California spotted a sunflower growing wild and snapped a photo of it. Other naturalists looked at the photo and agreed it's definitely a Common Sunflower, which bumped it up to research grade status, meaning scientists can actually use this sighting as real data. It's a small thing, but thousands of these small confirmations build the maps that show where plants actually grow, not just where botany books say they should.
