If you garden on old industrial land, near roadways, or in acidic soil, this points to a soil-craft trick, silicon-rich amendments, that can raise pH, restore nutrients, and temporarily bind up lead and cadmium before your vegetables ever take them up.
Scientists tested adding a special silicon material to soil that's been damaged by heavy metals like lead and cadmium plus too much acidity. The silicon boosted helpful nutrients, raised soil pH, and locked those toxic metals into forms plants can't easily absorb, which helped rice seedlings grow bigger and stay healthier. The catch: after repeated wet-dry cycles over a year, the silicon washed out and the metal-locking effect got weaker over time, so it's not a permanent fix.
