First complete genome mapped for a rare endangered rhododendron

Researchers used several advanced DNA-reading technologies to piece together the entire genome of a rare rhododendron species down to nearly every last gap, something never done before for this popular ornamental plant group. Having this complete genetic map means scientists can now study exactly what makes this endangered plant unique and use that knowledge to guide breeding programs, conservation efforts, and comparisons with other rhododendron species.
