If you grow lentils, the fuzziness of the leaves and the color of the seeds are not just decorative — they predict how long your plants will take to mature and how many pods they'll set, making them useful visual cues for seed saving and variety selection.

Scientists looked at nearly 200 different lentil varieties to find out whether easy-to-see features — like how hairy the leaves are or how deeply colored the seeds are — could tell you something useful about how the plant performs. They found they could: plants with medium-density fuzzy leaves took longer to mature and produced fewer seeds and pods. Seeds with rich, deep pigmentation tended to be smaller but actually yielded better overall. These visual clues could help farmers and breeders pick the best plants just by looking at them.
