Growing your own seed potatoes indoors just got more practical — tuning the ratio of red to blue light in a grow light turns out to be the key lever for healthy plants and strong yields without a field.

Scientists tested four types of LED grow lights on potato plants to see which helped them grow best indoors. One particular light — with a specific mix of red and blue wavelengths at higher intensity — produced plants and harvests as good as potatoes grown outside in a real field. As a bonus, they figured out which genes switch on when light gets too intense, causing the plant to make a mild natural toxin in its leaves.
