Yards and community gardens near old industrial sites or busy roads often carry hidden cadmium in the soil — and this research moves us closer to planting our way to a cleaner patch of earth instead of excavating it.

Researchers grew a remarkable plant called alpine pennywort — a natural 'hyperaccumulator' that soaks up heavy metals — in water spiked with cadmium, then ran a mild alternating electrical current through it. The electricity caused the plant to grow bigger, activate cleanup genes, and pump far more cadmium into its stems and leaves than it would on its own. This means we may be able to use electricity-assisted plant growing as a practical, low-disturbance way to clean toxic metal from polluted soils.

Mantel analysis and structural equation modeling showed that gene expression upregulation — not just physical ion movement — was the primary driver of enhanced cadmium enrichment.
