Those weedy sedges and coarse grasses taking over neglected lots near busy roads aren't just eyesores — they may be quietly helping detoxify the very pollutants those roads deposit into the soil beneath them.

Urban soils near roads and factories often carry invisible chemical pollution from exhaust fumes that can harm people and ecosystems for decades. Scientists tested a team approach: plant four tough native grasses, add two helpful soil bacteria, and mix in a fermented mustard-seed fertilizer. After just two months, this combination broke the nasty pollutants all the way down into harmless simple compounds and left the soil healthier than it started.

The combined plant-bacteria-biostimulant system (CPM) degraded 1-nitropyrene and 2-nitrofluorene within a 60-day microcosm experiment, mineralizing them into simple aliphatic hydrocarbons.

CPM treatment measurably improved soil nutrient content and enzymatic antioxidant activity, indicating simultaneous pollution cleanup and soil fertility restoration.

GC-MS analysis mapped the full chemical breakdown pathway, showing nitro-group reduction, hydroxylation, and aromatic-ring cleavage as sequential detoxification steps.
