Scientists found a molecular switch inside switchgrass — a tough prairie grass — that helps its roots handle cold soil temperatures. When they moved this switch into other plants like rice, those plants also grew stronger roots and shoots in the cold. The switch works by boosting a hormone system that plants use to regulate growth, essentially telling the plant to keep developing even when conditions are frigid.

Two upstream regulators were identified: PvbHLH94-1K positively activates PvATAF2 transcription while PvLBD37-9K suppresses it, revealing a regulatory network controlling cold stress response.
