Inoculating the legumes in your garden—clover, beans, peas—with the right soil bacteria can multiply how much free nitrogen they pull from the air and deposit into your soil, cutting your fertilizer needs while feeding the plants around them.

Scientists grew four types of clover-family plants in sunny and shady plots, adding beneficial root bacteria to some and leaving others without. Plants given the bacteria consistently grew faster, survived better, and captured far more nitrogen from the air—but mostly when they had plenty of sunlight. Shade pushed all the plants into a cautious, slow-growth mode regardless of bacteria, showing that plants need both good soil microbes and good light to really thrive.
